Chapter 1: Browser Basics
Module/Tutorial 1 in “The Internet” showed me a lot of helpful ways to stay better organized while browsing the Internet. While I was already aware of many of the features discussed, I was hesitant to try some of them simply because I didn’t know how exactly to use them. The most helpful tools that this chapter has opened my eyes to are the abilities to change my home tab, to add/group bookmarked tabs, and to manage my browser history. Changing my home tab to the ‘Current Students’ page of LCCC has allowed me quick access links to the other pages I use most often for class work. In terms of casual browsing and other outside projects, I never realized the sheer number of things that were logged in my browser history, even down to a single-file list of E-mail deletions. Regularly clearing the clutter from my history, as well as keeping a set of 4 different parts of a project within a bookmarked folder, will save me time navigating back to these pages in a fresh browsing session.
Another thing I was happy to learn was how different browsers have similar features, even if they’re named differently. After using Chrome for years, I was happy to be able to navigate Firefox rather easily upon first use. The abilities to search, view my settings & downloads, and even add extensions all came fairly quickly. Personally, I’m also glad the book added a section about printing a webpage. I’ve had many issues with that feature in the past, but upon looking into other tutorials, I believe the issues stemmed from the connection to our home’s printer and not from me messing up the process or options.
