Chapter 4: Information Resources on the Web

In my opinion, Module 4 in “The Internet” has been the most important and practical chapter so far. I have used many of the Internet resources mentioned in this study, including news and weather pages, e-commerce sites, and audio/video streaming platforms. While I haven’t yet reached the stage of my life where I’d need to use employment or home-buying websites, I’m relieved to see that there are a number of helpful online options available for when that time comes.

Two things that I noticed from this chapter that I believe go hand in hand are accuracy of news information and proper citation. It is certainly reflective of this era that a book describing the vast information sources on the Internet has to emphasize that not all sources can be trusted. I had a brief experience in 2020-2021 writing for a news & editorial podcast, and I took great effort to make sure the information I gathered was as accurate as possible. However, every media platform has its own bias, no matter how subtle or glaring. With many platforms citing “anonymous” sources, taking material out of context, or not including citations at all, it falls upon us as consumers to weigh the credibility of the information ourselves. I feel that learning the details of copyright, fair use, and public domain is also critical for when I establish a career, especially considering how serious the consequences of plagiarism can be.
